These classes are ideal for beginners as well as slightly more advanced students. Watercolour lends itself well to various techniques and ways of applying colour onto paper. Students are encouraged to produce a painting that is not too inhibited. Still life, flowers etc as well as painting outdoors if weather is suitable.

 

LIFE & FIGURE DRAWING/PAINTING Christine Burgess

The emphasis in this course is on structure and form working from the unclothed and clothed figure. A range of drawing media will be explored, both monochrome and colour. Progression to or the option of painting is encouraged.

 

FROM DRAWING TO PAINTING Jane Pollard

A course which addresses the fundamental techniques of drawing and painting either for beginners or for those who feel they need some revision and consolidation. It will start from the premise that sound drawing skills are necessary to make progress in painting, however, paint will be introduced in controlled exercises fairly early in the course and with an emphasis on personal development.

A course for students to develop their drawing and painting skills in one or a variety of media. The course aims to encourage creative thinking through studies in still life and imaginative themes of work, with an emphasis on personal development. It is ideal for the beginner and for the more confident student needing the challenge of improving techniques and ideas.

A course suitable for students with some experience in drawing and painting. Models provide a professional atmosphere for this important area of study. The prime aim is the development of individual creative ability together with the obvious aims concerned with drawing and painting from life—a wide variety of media is encouraged.

 

PAINTING & DRAWING (MIXED MEDIA) (2 weeks model)

An opportunity to explore various approaches to painting and drawing which will enable students to develop a strong visual language working in a variety of media directly from observation of objects set up in the studio.  This course is suitable for those with some experience of painting and drawing.

Working directly from the model. The beginner or the more experienced will be encouraged to value both creativity and technical accomplishment. A class for the complete beginner or students with a little experience who wish to discover and extend their capabilities.  The course will incorporate a variety of media with the emphasis on diversity of technique and experimentation.

A course for students with some basic skills who wish to strengthen drawing skills through studies in composition, line, tone and colour. The course aims to develop technical skills and encourage individual creativity.

This is a course for absolute beginners, but those who want to improve their existing drawing skills are also welcome. The course will use a variety of media and will concentrate on observation and different ways of interpreting what you see.

 

A NEW FOCUS ON PAINTING

The course is theme based and encourages students use their imagination. Looking at the work of contemporary artists and exchanging ideas is an important pat of the course. A basic knowledge of more than one medium would be helpful.

This is a course for absolute beginners and students who would like to develop and gain experience in using gouache and acrylic. The course will concentrate on application of the materials through composition and colour studies for students to produce personal and creative directions.

For those with no experience in watercolour painting who would like to learn basic watercolour techniques from scratch.

The course is suitable for those with some previous experience who want to extend their skills. Work will be based on observation, but you will also be encouraged to use your imagination. There will be two sessions per term using a life model. The study of contemporary artists’ work is part of the course.

 

PORTRAIT & COSTUME DRAWING & PAINTING Neil Drury

Working in a medium of your choice, we will explore the richness of form, colour and texture to be found when depicting the clothed model, as well as aspects of scale, stylization and ‘likeness’ in portraiture. Suitable for students with some experience.

A course for students who have mastered the basics of drawing and painting with acrylics, gouache or oil paint. The emphasis this term will be on form, tone and colour.

A course for students who can draw and have experience in using watercolour.

The aim this term will be to explore the uses of "wet-in-wet" and other watercolour applications.

Working almost entirely from observation, this course explores still-life in its widest sense, from basic exercises in mixing colours, relationship of colour and tone, space, texture and mood to developing ideas from other artists using reproductions, and evolving possibly more 'abstract' composition combining media and different drawing strategies, trying to express the potential of any chosen media to its fullest.  Some experience needed.
